Sometimes called a VI curve tracer, an IV curve tracer, or an oscilloscope curve tracer, this general-purpose instrument is invaluable in troubleshooting. The curve tracer generates AC excitation across its two leads and then displays a voltage vs. current plot in real time. The resulting plot can be used to track down opens, shorts, inductors, capacitors resistors and various semiconductors, as well as measure the breakdown voltage and phase relationship between voltage and current.
The registered response in response to the test signal is essentially V/I Characteristics of the analyzed circuit. The software allows you to instantly automatically compare two signatures and signal the magnitude of the deviation of their shape on the basis of which we can conclude that the electrical parameters of the considered circuit are identical or not.
